1. Look for references. Ask your Maui Wedding Planner or the Wedding Site Coordinator for recommendations. If you are not using a Wedding Planner, search the Maui Chamber of Commerce or the Hawaii Visitor Bureau websites. If possible, ask Maui locals for recommendations. Check with the Better Business Bureau. Search the Internet for forums relating to the Wedding Caterer you are considering. Be sure to use a Caterer who is experienced in Weddings such as those listed below.
2. Call, email or visit the website for each Wedding Caterer you are considering. You will get a feel for the company, their professionalism, and you can find out other specifics. Company history, specialties (cultural, for example in Hawaii) and availability are just as important as pricing.
3. Interview the Wedding Caterers. Tell them about you and your wishes, and get their reaction. Ask the Caterer how they charge; what's included, deposits, payments and cancellation policy. Many Wedding Caterers have extra fees such as champagne pouring or cake cutting. Hopefully by this time, you can confirm your feeling for the company, good or bad.
4. Normally, the next step would be to do a taste test with each Wedding Caterer still left in the running. However, when planning a destination wedding this may not be possible. Try to pick foods you have tried before. Use your planner's or other locals' suggestions as to what foods make for a great Hawaiian Wedding reception.
5. For a "small" Maui Wedding many couples choose to simply spring for dinner at a local favorite restaurant after the ceremony. Arrangements can be made ahead of time to provide several selections from the menu or a variety of hors d’oeuvres can be served.
6. Always get everything in writing.
